Sight words account for 75% of the words found in beginning reader text. Sight words can be difficult to sound out because most of the time they don’t follow phonics rules. Once students know some sight words, they can focus on the meaning of the text and only decode more challenging words. By increasing the number of times a child encounters a sight word we help move the word into the child’s long-term memory.
